Global smartphone shipments experienced an over 10% on-quarter slump in the first quarter of 2024 and are expected to drop further in the second quarter.
Abstract

Global smartphone shipments totaled 281.1 million units in the first quarter of 2024, a 6.7% increase from the previous year. This growth was influenced by factors such as the prolonged conflict between Russia and Ukraine, a slow recovery in consumption in the European market, and mild demand increases in Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa despite a continuous rise in sales in China.

Smartphone shipments worldwide are expected to grow 8.3% year-on-year to 274.3 million units in the second quarter of 2024, driven by a low base from the previous year, according to DIGITIMES Research.

Compared to a projection made in March, DIGITIMES Research has adjusted its global smartphone shipment forecast for 2024 to 1.1684 billion units, down by 11.2 million units. The main reason for the downward revision is that Samsung's shipment goal for the year's first half is lower than initially estimated.
