DIGITIMES Research estimates that global semiconductor (IC design + IDM) industry revenue reached US$523 billion in 2023, a decrease of 8.9%. Looking forward to 2024, driven by the demand for AI applications and memory, global semiconductor revenue is expected to exceed US$600 billion and return to the growth track.
However, geopolitical and macroeconomic instability remains a major concern. Geographically, the US is expected to still account for nearly 60% of the global semiconductor output. South Korea will benefit from the recovery in memory demand, and its share will also rebound.
Amid the headwinds hitting the global semiconductor industry in 2023, AI applications stood out as a promising sector. Nvidia benefited from a surge in AI server shipments that drove strong demand for high-end GPUs, allowing it to dethrone the long-time market leader Intel.
